St. Francis Medical Center is a proud member of Lourdes Cardiovascular Institute
St. Francis Medical Center is the heart and vascular hospital of Mercer County, offering the highest level of cardiovascular care from diagnostics to treatment. St. Francis is the only hospital in Mercer County with a state-issued Certificate of Need for Cardiac Surgery. In addition, as part of Lourdes Cardiovascular Institute, the cardiac team at St. Francis has expanded and strengthened its breadth and depth of services and resources, particularly in the offering of minimally invasive and sternal-sparing approaches to cardiothoracic surgery. St. Francis Medical Center is the only hospital in Mercer County offering minimally invasive, robotic heart surgery. We earned this designation because of our commitment to remain in and serve the residents of Mercer County. This designation means we are the only hospital in the county the state allows to perform open heart surgery and provide cardiothoracic surgical back-up should the need arise. This designation also means we're the only hospital in the county authorized to operate an electrophysiology lab (EP) where complex procedures can be completed on patients with heart rhythm disorders.
SFMC continuously adds new techniques and procedures to the cardiovascular service line. An example is the $3.7 million hybrid cardiovascular operating room, the first and only facility in the county, where high-risk cardiac procedures can be performed in the safest possible environment. The hybrid OR gives our surgeons increased flexibility by coupling traditional surgical capabilities with the latest imaging modalities. This advanced cardiovascular imaging technology provides the safest option for patients and staff by reducing radiation exposure and offering superior imaging quality with multiple viewing capabilities. The hybrid OR also enables the cardiac surgeon and the electrophysiologist to work hand-in-hand on procedures such as the Convergent Procedure for patients with long histories of atrial fibrillation.
The combination cardiac surgery and a hybrid OR enables St. Francis to offer the widest range of cardiovascular treatment options in Mercer County. Our "one-stop shop" approach to cardiovascular care means that patients who are admitted to St. Francis with heart emergencies will never require transfer to another hospital for angioplasties or other life-saving procedures. Because every second counts during a heart emergency, avoiding an unnecessary transfer can mean the difference between a good or bad outcome. St. Francis’s heart and vascular services are as comprehensive as those offered at the major academic medical centers in Pennsylvania or New York and we provide these services right in Mercer County. Our location offers an enormous advantage for local patients, because having loved ones nearby, greatly enhances the healing process and saves time, money, and lessens stress for both the patient and family members.
At St. Francis, an outstanding multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular specialists and more care for heart and vascular patients. Our heart and vascular physicians are strongly devoted to St. Francis and our mission of valuing the sanctity of life and treating every individual with dignity. These physicians have undergone extensive training and over 90% of hold Board Certification in at least two specialties. With offices right in the hospital, the cardiac surgeons are available when their patients need them, day or night. St. Francis partners creatively and strategically with Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, also a member of Trinity Health, to enhance our ability to provide a full-range of top quality heart and vascular care. Stay tuned for more exciting news in the cardiovascular service line!
