St. Francis Medical Center is pleased to announce a new Chairman of the Board of Trustees. David L. Knowlton, a Pennington resident, was recently elected to the leadership position succeeding Paul Langevin. Mr. Langevin served as Chairman since 2006 and has completed his term on the board. Mr. Knowlton has been on the Board of Trustees since 2006.
Mr. Knowlton has been a leader and advisor in health issues in New Jersey and nationally since 1977. Mr. Knowlton founded and served as Executive Director of the Health Care Payers Coalition of New Jersey; a non-profit corporation representing business and labor organization who provide healthcare. He is currently the President and CEO of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute. Founded in 1997, the Institute undertakes projects to ensure that safety, quality accountability and cost containment are all closely linked to the delivery of health care services in New Jersey.
Mr. Knowlton currently serves on the Board and as immediate past Chairman of the Leapfrog Group, a nationally recognized organization committed to reduce medical errors and improving the quality of patient care throughout the United States. He has served as a member of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) Steering Committees for Standardizing Cardiac Surgery Performance Measures. He co-chairs the NQF Steering Committee on Stroke Measures. Mr. Knowlton served as the Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New Jersey from 1987 to 1990.
Mr. Knowlton was appointed by then Governor-elect Chris Christie to serve as Chairman of the Health Sub-Committee of the Christie Transition Team. He has chaired a health reform working group for Senator Joseph Vitale, Chairman of the Health Senate Committee, which resulted in the first wave of health reform in New Jersey in 2009 and which continues to work on the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in New Jersey.
Mr. Knowlton holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and education from University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut) respectively.
